Varicose veins

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins (also known as varices) are abnormal, diseased and saccular swollen veins. They predominantly affect the lower limbs, but may also manifest in other areas. Varicose veins are a very common affliction in Europe and North America (affecting up to 40% of the adult population to a greater or lesser extent, predominantly women).

Varicose veins are always tortuous, elongated and visible, and are regarded as a genuine aesthetic defect by many women. As well as venous insufficiency, which is the main cause of varicose veins, numerous factors can trigger the condition, including blood clots in the deep veins, general compression of the blood vessels, muscle pump failure, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

As well as being an aesthetic ailment, varicose veins may also cause other symptoms, including swollen ankles, muscle cramps, pins and needles in the legs, swollen/tired legs, a constant cold sensation and telangiectasias (harmless dilation of the venules, capillaries and arteriolae), visible through the skin.
